The sun rises and we hear the call, though we don’t understand it.
The king is seized by his brother and thrown to his death.
The son climbs onto the rock, he has returned.
We’ve seen these scenes over and over again. Yet somehow, someway, each time these classic scenes cause shivers to run down our spine.
We love the movies. No, we obsess over the movies (why else would you be reading this). We talk about them on forums; we carry them around on our phones, and have all the music on our mp3 players. We can quote the movie, line by line. Over and over again we watch the films and each time we get laughs, tears (not saying I do!
) and those shivers down our back.
Why? Why do we love these films so much more then the other movies that are out there? I don’t know about you, but I would much rather see Lion King again then any other film of 2007 (even if Harry Potter was a good film, it can’t compare). So what does the Lion King Films have which other movies do not?
Do they have better characters? A better story? More stunning scenes? Is it more moving? More epic? Better music?
The answer to all five of the above questions, no. We may love the Lion King, but it is not a classic story. The music is good, but certainly not mind blowing. Its characters are aimed at young chil-
Ah! I think I have just hit something which is the key to our question here. This may not be the answer to everyone, but for me it certainly is. How old were you when you first saw the film?
5? 10? 15? 20?
My guess is you were in the 5-10 range. You saw this film and your young mind was blown away. Another film I love is Star Wars, and it’s the same story.
Star Wars fans had never seen such amazing battles before they saw Star Wars. The story of good versus evil they were given was not original to Star Wars. Vader wasn’t new; he was a recycled version of something else. But it was new to them, just like the Lion King was new to you and me.
Simba, Scar, Mufasa, and Nala were all new and mind blowing to us. Then a little bit of humour, and a lot of music mixed in made the perfect movie for us. Did you get that, for US.
These films are not for everyone, because only me and you can “feel the love” for these films. We watch them and get this funny feeling. But if you had not seen these films when you were a child, you would not get that feeling. That is why these films can only ever be loved by those who loved them when they were children. I get the sense there will be no adults converting to Lion King fandom.
So, to sum it all up, “What Is It That We Love?” The answer, it’s a piece of our childhood we have made into our teenage/adult life and we love it.
Thanks for reading! Now to think about what to podcast…
